Let me take you back to 1993. I was a sophomore offensive lineman at the University of South Carolina. New season. New jersey number. New playbook.
And I thought that meant new results.
But here’s what I learned real quick: a new uniform doesn’t change your performance—your mindset does.
I brought old habits with me: pride that made me avoid asking questions, a fear of being fully seen, and a tendency to play small when pressure hit.
And I see too many leaders doing the same thing today. They swap out calendars, set new goals, and expect transformation—but they never pause to ask who they really are when things get hard.
Let me ask you that now.
When the pressure rises…
Who do you become?
- The calm voice or the hidden one?
- The fixer who takes on too much?
- The leader who delays decisions and calls it patience?
Before you plan Q1, answer this:
“This year, I will show up as the leader who __________.”
This was the same shift I had to make when I stepped into the Obama Administration years later. You don’t lead at the White House because you have a good resume. You lead because you show up with clarity, calm, and conviction in the moments that test everyone else.
Momentum begins with identity, not activity.
