Words versus Actions
Early in my leadership career of managing people, I thought my job was to give answers.
Set direction.
Drive results.
Keep things moving.
And I assumed…
If I communicated the strategy clearly enough—my team would follow it.
But I was wrong.
Because what they actually followed…
Was me.
Not my slides.
Not my plans.
Not my words.
My behavior.
If I did it, they would do it.
And once I realized that—everything about how I led changed.
The Truth Most Leaders Miss
Most leaders think their team resists change.
But that’s not what’s happening.
Your team isn’t watching the organization first.
They’re watching you.
- How you respond
- What you acknowledge
- What you avoid
Because in uncertainty…
People follow behavior before they follow strategy.
What Your Team Is Dealing With (Right Now)
Your team is carrying more than just work:
- Economic pressure
- Organizational pressure
- Personal uncertainty
And they’re asking:
“Does leadership actually get this?”
“Are we going to be okay?”
But here’s the key:
They don’t get answers from your words.
They get answers from your presence.
What You’re Teaching (Without Realizing It)
Every day, your team is learning how to operate… from you.
If you:
- Avoid hard conversations
- Focus only on execution
- Act like nothing’s changed
They learn:
- Stay quiet
- Don’t challenge anything
- Just do your job
But if you:
- Acknowledge reality
- Invite conversation
- Stay present
They learn something different:
It’s safe to think.
It’s expected to engage.
Culture Is Not What You Say
Let’s simplify this:
Culture is not your values statement.
Culture is not your strategy deck.
Culture is what your leadership reinforces—every single day.
The Hidden Risk
If you don’t adapt…
Your team still will.
But not in the way you want.
They’ll:
- Lower expectations
- Disengage
- Do only what’s required
Not because they don’t care.
Because they’re responding to what you’ve made possible.
The Leadership Shift
Adaptability here means:
Modeling how to lead when things aren’t clear.
That requires:
- Acknowledging reality
- Creating space for conversation
- Teaching people how to think—not just what to do
- Staying visible when pressure rises
Because your behavior…
is the blueprint your team uses to adapt.
Final Thoughts
So instead of asking:
“Why isn’t my team adapting?”
Ask:
“What am I modeling that’s shaping how they adapt?”
Because that answer?
That’s your leadership.
Your Next Step
If this resonates, there’s a deeper conversation to be had.
This is the work I do with leaders who understand that culture isn’t built in strategy sessions—
It’s built in how you show up, every day, when your team is watching.
And if you’re ready to lead at that level, we can have that conversation
